Leopold II was keen to show the world that the young nation of Belgium was one in the midst of expansion. The Cinquantenaire Park formed the backdrop to many grandiose projects such as the National Exhibition in 1880 and the World Fair of 1897. Join us as we go back to the time of steel and glass and ‘great inventions'.

3. The promotion of the colonyLeopold II
King Leopold II was keen to stamp his mark through avantgarde architecture and culture while at the same time raising funds for his colonial forays with a colonial exhibition. Thus did the King become patron of a new artistic style: art nouveau. A visit to the Pavilion of Human Passions and of the Hotel van Eetvelde built by Victor Horta.

7. Heading for Africa from Brussels, Avenue TervurenLeopold II
Leopold II postponed the 1895 World Fair for two years in order to complete construction works on the Avenue Tervuren. The avenue was to form the link between the fair's two main sites: Cinquantenaire Park and Tervuren. This majestic avenue takes in some truly splendid architecture and parks. 12. The visionary cityLeopold II
Thanks to King Leopold II's dynamic vision, Brussels evolved from a somewhat provincial town into a truly effervescent city offering unique skylines, monumental architecture and new city gateways. However, not everyone was over the moon with his enormous projects and Charles Buls even relinquished his position as mayor in protest. A walk from the Botanical Gardens to the Palace of Justice.
